Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate fuel consumption, total fuel cost, and cost per mile from distance, fuel economy in US MPG, and price per US gallon. Calculations stay in your browser.

Calculator

Enter total distance in US miles. Zero is allowed.

Use US miles per US gallon. Must be greater than zero.

Enter the price for one US gallon. Zero is allowed.

Estimate scope

Fuel is only one vehicle expense. This estimate excludes maintenance, depreciation, insurance, parking, tolls, taxes, and other operating costs.

How it works

What is a fuel cost calculator?

A fuel cost calculator estimates how much fuel a distance requires and what that fuel costs at a given price. It can help with gig-driving expense checks, commuting budgets, and trip planning, but it does not guarantee the amount spent at the pump.

Fuel consumption and total cost

Estimated US gallons used equal distance in miles divided by fuel economy in US miles per gallon. Total fuel cost equals those gallons multiplied by the entered USD price per US gallon. Calculations retain unrounded values even though displayed results are rounded for reading.

MPG and fuel efficiency

MPG describes how many miles a vehicle travels on one US gallon. Higher fuel efficiency reduces gallons used for the same distance. Actual MPG can differ from an advertised rating because of traffic, idling, driving style, road conditions, vehicle load, and mechanical condition.

Fuel cost per mile

Cost per mile divides total fuel cost by distance and makes trips of different lengths easier to compare. For zero distance, fuel used and total cost are zero while cost per mile is N/A.

Fuel cost is not total vehicle cost

This tool estimates fuel only. Use the Gig Driver or Uber Earnings calculators when comparing earnings with broader entered expenses, and use the Mileage Deduction Calculator only for its separate deduction estimate. None of those amounts should be treated as interchangeable.

Maintenance, depreciation, insurance, parking, tolls, taxes, financing, and other expenses are not included in this result.

Example calculation

Illustrative trip example, separate from your calculation:

Distance
250 miles
Fuel economy
25 US MPG
Fuel price
$3.50 per US gallon
Fuel consumed
10 US gallons
Estimated total fuel cost
$35.00

The trip uses 250 ÷ 25 = 10 US gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, that is $35.00, or $0.14 per mile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide distance in miles by fuel economy in US MPG to estimate gallons used, then multiply those gallons by the price per US gallon. Use values that reflect the same vehicle and trip.

What does MPG mean?

MPG means miles per gallon. A higher MPG value means the vehicle travels farther on one gallon and generally uses less fuel over the same distance.

Does this calculator use US or Imperial gallons?

It uses US miles per US gallon and prices per US gallon. Imperial gallons are a different volume, so Imperial MPG values should not be entered without a proper conversion.

How is fuel cost per mile calculated?

Total fuel cost is divided by distance. When distance is zero, the per-mile result is N/A because division by zero does not produce a meaningful rate.

Why might actual fuel cost differ from the estimate?

Actual MPG and fuel spending can vary with traffic, idling, driving style, road and weather conditions, vehicle load, maintenance, and the price paid when refueling.

Does this include maintenance and other vehicle costs?

No. The estimate covers fuel only. It excludes maintenance, depreciation, insurance, parking, tolls, taxes, financing, and other vehicle operating costs.
